Why should you use LP Revivalist?

The quality of the sound you get from your precious vinyl depends upon the quality of the source. The ultimate source are the grooves within the vinyl and these need to be as clean as possible. The only cleaners that work are wet/vacuum cleaners. Dry cleaners just move the dirt from one place to another and cannot do anything about ingrained grime and grease in the grooves. Wet cleaners by themselves can be even worse as they just turn grime into mud which sticks in the grooves. In order to remove the accumulation of many years requires a solvent and detergent to loosen the stuff and then a vacuum pump to suck it out of the grooves while it is loose. That is exactly the process we use.

If you want to transfer a recording to CD then you need ensure that you use the absolutely best turntable, arm, stylus, power supply, phono preamp and preamp stages. Using a cheap USB turntable will just not do the recording justice. Fundamentally the grooves of the record contain information, lots of information, in fact lots and lots of information. To give you an idea of how much data this is, if you record at 24 bits 96,000Hz then a typical 40 minute record will occupy around 1.4Gb. Now remember by definition digitalisation involves throwing information away in the sampling process and you begin to realise how much information there is to be extracted. Using a cheap turntable is like trying to take photos using a cheap disposable camera with a piece of sticky tape over the lens. You might get the general idea of what the landscape looks like but there will be no detail. Using our front end we ensure that we get as much information as possible. Our front end is so good that it clearly shows up the standard of production in a recording and you can clearly tell if the mixing desk is analogue or digital.

We capture the recording in our Apple hardware and associated software. The best recording software is available on Apple computers which is one reason they are used by more video and audio studios than PCs.

We also apply sophisticated digital processing to the recording to clean up the clicks and pops with the result that you can genuinely get a result which sounds better than the orginal scratched record.

If you send us an email at andrew@lprevivalist.com with SAMPLE as the subject we will send you a short 30 second sample of a compressed AAC file of our work and that we have produced using a typical cheap USB turntable. It is not feasible to send an uncompressed file as they are many megabytes even for a short sample, however even with a compressed file the difference is very obvious.

Can you order multiple copies of a record?

Unless you have permission from the copyright owner we cannot make multiple copies of a record. In the event that we can make additional copies these are priced at $4.50 per copy.

Can you transfer a badly scratched record to CD?

It is very likely that we can make a transfer provided that the record is not so scratched that it will not play without the stylus jumping. Just how much we minimise or eliminate the scratches on the CD depends upon how damaged the recording is.

Are some records impossible to fix?

If your record is badly damaged by use of a worn stylus then the information in the grooves may have been damaged so much that information has been lost. Although we can remove a substantial amount of the crackle and pops, and we can remove the white noise sound caused by worn grooves, it is not going to sound "new" but will sound better than the raw vinyl.

Can you do cassettes?

Yes! We are pleased to be able to report that after doing internal trials of cassette to CD transfer we are satisfied that we can provide this to a satisfactory level of quality and have launched the service. More details can be found on the cassette to cd page.

Can you do mini disks?

Yes we can. The process is digitial end to end so is the highest quality possible. See our mini disk to CD page for more details.

You did a conversion for me 2 months ago and now I have scratched the CD and it won't play. Can you do me another copy?

Possibly. As we state on this web site, we delete the digitial recordings of your records or cassettes after 30 days. However we do make regular backups of all our data and it is possible that we can recover your data from a backup. The backups are of a revolving type and are overwritten in a time frame determined by the level of activity. We currently estimate that backups are retrievable for about 4-5 months. There is a $10 charge for determining if we still have your recording in the backup and if so making you a copy.

Can you tell me more about Music Servers?

Yes see our Music Server page.
